2009 census results put Kenya’s population at 38.6m

By By John Harrington Ndeta, Ajabu Africa News, posted September 1, 2010

NAIROBI, Kenya. , SEPTEMBER 2_Kenyans 2009 Population and Housing Census results released early this week have put the total population of the second republic after the promulgation of the new constitution at 38,610,097 million. The release of the results exactly one year since the actual census was
conducted ends months and days of speculations and questions about why the delay.

The actual census was conducted on the night of August 24 last year, followed by intensive data processing, editing, evaluating and analyzing the results.
Parity between male and female in the country seems to have struck even with number of males at 19, 192, 458 and female 19,417,639.

While releasing the results on Monday, Kenya’s Planning Minister Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya said the population has increased by 10 million up from 28.7 million recorded in the 1999 census.

Speaking at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) Mr. Oparanya said the exercise faced major financial challenges but expressed confidence that the results are the true reflection of the population.

The census exercise was carried out in August 2009 and saw the government spend some Ksh 8.4 billions. Data captured in the census results was also categorized along the 47 counties created by the new constitution. This will go a long way in helping identify underdeveloped areas in terms of technology and those lagging behind in education.

Another paradigm upon which the results were triangulated is the ethnic factor which had kicked off a storm with many people saying that such results will hype the ethnic tensions amongst Kenyans. National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Chairman, Dr. Mzalendo Kibunjia, argues that such a move would defeat the work of the commission charged with integrating Kenyans and that the new constitution has clauses barring tribalism.

Like many other Kenyans, the commission had expressed displeasure over the move to release the figures based on tribe. But Planning Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth defended the move to release the population of ethnic and religious groups saying that it would assist in national planning and development.

Of the 42+ Kenyan communities, the Kikuyu’s were said to be the most populous tribe with 6,622,576 people. At Position 2 are Luhya,s with 5.6, followed by Kalenjins at 4, 967, 328, and Luo’s at 4, 044, 440 etc.

The other closely looked at category was religious inclinations where over 18m were said to be protestants.

Catholics were put at 9m while other Christians and Muslims equaled each other at 4m .

A repeat census has been ordered in eight districts after inconsistencies were noted in the population data for areas in Northern Kenya. The districts affected are Lagdera, Wajir East, Mandera Central, Mandera East, Mandera West, Turkana Central, Turkana North, and Turkana South.

Provincially, the vast Rift Valley Province leads the pack with 10, 006, 805. This is followed by Eastern Province which has 5, 668 123, Nyanza with 5, 442, 711, Central with 4, 383, 743, Western with 4, 334,
