US President Barack Obama position on ICC Process in Kenya

By John Harry Ndeta, Ajabu Africa News, Nairobi Kenya, posted December 20, 2010

US President Barack Obama whose father was Kenyan issued a statement in the wake of announcements by the International Criminal Court naming six suspects alleged to have participated in the post-election violence that threatened to tear Kenya apart three years ago. In his statement, President Obama encourages all Kenyans to take a moment to reflect on the tremendous progress their country has made since those dark days of 2007/8.

The US president congratulated Kenyan people and their leaders for working towards reconciling communities, reforming institutions to better serve the public good, and to putting Kenya on a path to lasting peace and prosperity.

“Kenya is turning a page in its history, moving away from impunity and divisionism toward an era of accountability and equal opportunity,” read the statement in part. We recognize that the path ahead is not easy, but if the Kenyan people have the courage and resolve to reject those who would drag the country back into the past and rob Kenyans of the singular opportunity that is before them, the country could realize its vast potential and successes.

In pursuit of these goals, Obama urged all of Kenyan leaders, and the people whom they serve, to cooperate fully with the ICC investigations and remain focused on implementation of the reform agenda and the future of Kenya as nation.

He said that those found responsible will be held accountable for their crimes as individuals.   Obama observed that no community should be singled out for shame or held collectively responsible.  Let the accused carry their own burdens - and let us keep in mind that under the ICC process they are innocent until proven guilty.

“As you move forward, Kenyans can count on the United States as a friend and partner,” ended the presidents’ statement sent to the media houses via the Nairobi embassy office.
