Air Uganda has increased the frequency of its flights to various destinations intensifying the battle for passengers in the East African region.
In a statement released on Thursday, the airline said it was going to service the Nairobi-Entebbe route thrice daily on weekdays in an effort to “cater to growing demand by customers.”
The carrier has also increased daily flights between Juba and Entebbe and reintroduced direct flights to Zanzibar and Mombasa.
Air Uganda currently flies to five destinations in the East African region from its Entebbe hub.
In the year ending October 2011, the airline experienced a 17 per cent increase in passenger traffic, despite rising ticket prices.
The airline is the first Ugandan carrier to survive in the market for a period longer than two years since Uganda Airlines collapsed in 2001.
The negative track record of Ugandan carriers has been attributed to mismanagement and stiff competition from the aviation market leader in East Africa, Kenya Airways.
Business travel within the region has been on the upswing with the adoption of the common market and the opening up of Juba as a commercial destination.
The airlines have been doing their utmost to take advantage of this increased travel with Kenya Airways planning to serve domestic and regional routes through its subsidiary, Jumbo Jet.
The discovery of oil in Uganda has also motivated international airlines as they seek their share of the Entebbe hub.
