Africans in Boston meet Lt. Governor

Massachusetts Lt. Governor, Tim Murray meets Africans in Boston at Karibu restaurant in Waltham.

By Ajabu Africa, posted December 21, 2011

WALTHAM, Mass.,_Several dozen members of the African community in Boston met with Massachusetts deputy Governor, Tim Murray last Friday December 16 to talk about issues affecting them in the commonwealth.

The meeting took place at the Ugandan Karibu restaurant in Waltham.

It was organized by the Africans in Boston, an upcoming group of Africans in the region who are on a mission to bridge the gap between different African communities and to provide a framework that transcend the cultural, educational and business aspects of the Africans communities living in the Boston area.

Talking to AjabuAfrica.com during a telephone interview, Vaury Ignegongba from Chad, who is one of the founding members, said that the meeting with Tim Murray was very productive and opened doors for future discussions on important issues.

“We had a very promising conversation with Mr. Murray and we exchanged on some of the issues that are critical to the African communities living in Massachusetts”, said Ignegongba.

He added that according to reliable information coming out of the most recent census data in the USA, the population of Africans in Boston has now reached 101,776 .

Therefore, Ignegongba said, it was important to pool this power together if Africans ever hope to make a significant impact that would be noticed by decision makers.

“We discussed with and asked Mr. Murray to continue exploring avenues to work with us on immigration, health care, African representation in state and government agencies, employment, housing, commerce, education, security and more,” he said.

He promised to continue making outreach seeking to collaborate with organizations and individuals in every corner of the African community in the region to bring Africans together around the goals of the organization.

The Africans in Boston organization is currently holding two networking events in Boston to encourage African to start on the journey of unity.

The first event is Hakuna Sundays, a bi-weekly social event for African students, young professionals, entrepreneurs, business men and women and others to network.

Another event, ADNet Tuesdays (African Diaspora Networking Tuesdays) is an opportunity for young professionals and students to meet, socialize  and have a good meal in a relaxed atmosphere after a busy day at work .

Both events are free entry and start at 7pm at different locations around Cambridge and the South end of Boston.

Interested Africans are encouraged to check the calendar of events in advance on the Africans in Boston website at www.africansinboston.org.
