Deval Patrick to Meet Africans in Worcester

Massachusetts Governor, Deval L. Patrick

by Harrison Maina, Ajabu Africa News, posted September 16, 2010

WORCESTER, Mass., _Massachusetts Governor, Deval L.  Patrick, will meet with the African Immigrant community in Massachusetts at a rally to be held at the Mt. Carmel Center in Worcester, Mass., on Sunday, September 19, 2010 starting at 3pm.

The governor, who is the first ever African American Governor in  Massachusetts, has in the past expressed  desire to interact more with the African community in the commonwealth, and  acknowledges the valuable contribution by Africans  at increasing the diversity, development and well being of the state.

During a previous meeting he held with Africans in Boston in April this year, Governor Patrick informed Africans that he has lived and worked in many African countries for many years, including Kenya and Uganda, so he understands their needs and aspirations.

The Sunday meeting has been organized by the Governors African Council (GAC), an independent community initiative that aims to strengthen the African voice in Massachusetts through political and civic engagement, the Massachusetts governor recognizes the input that the hard working Africans are putting in the development of the economy and society in Massachusetts.

Official at the GAC informed AjabuAfrica.com that they are in the process of formulating the African Agenda, which is aimed at engaging the state leadership to pay closer attention to specific needs of the African community.

With about 76,000 registered voters in Massachusetts, the GAC hopes to encourage these voters to come out in big numbers in the upcoming fall elections and vote for Governor Patrick.

The governor holds a narrow lead in most polls, so any vote from the African community could turn out to be quite useful.

Governor Patrick is expected to lay out his vision for the African community in Massachusetts on Sunday.

Africans in the entire state have been requested to plan and attend the event which starts at 3pm, and spend time  interacting with their governor , which in turn will bring them closer to decision makers who determine their future.
