NAIROBI, Kenya. , AUGUST 28_Gospel artists have been advised to produce music that promote and spread the word of God rather than aiming at maximizing profit.

The advice was given by several speakers during a CD launch ceremony by Isabella Gitau, a Kenyan woman gospel artist from Lowell. The colorful occasion took place at the PCEA Ushindi church last Sunday.

Upon releasing the new CD titled Ihoya (Prayer), Isabella Gitau, a resident of Lowell, becomes the latest addition to the ever increasing number of gospel music worshippers who are keeping the Kenyan community in America fully stocked with a wide variety of Christian worship music.

Gitau is also a social issues contributor with Ajabu Africa News.

Gospel music has of late overtaken secular music as the most demanded music by Kenyans, both in the motherland and in the Diaspora.

As a result, scores of gospel music artists, both local and others visiting from Kenya, have been crisscrossing the states entertaining and leading Kenyans in praise and worship in churches, crusades and other functions.

During last Sundays event, attended by over 100 Kenyans of all ages, over a dozen artists took turns in a curtain raiser performance, showing support for the new rookie in the field.

Addressing guests via a pre-recorded video display right before she took to the stage for her debut performance, the new artists said that she put her heart and soul as she juggled between work and school to produce the CD.

“I praise God for giving me the ability to see this project to the end,” said Gitau.
Gitau then proceeded to entertain with hit after hit, surprising many in attendance with the quality of her music.

Leading the event, the master of ceremonies, Stephen Kanyoni from Lowell, said that it was funny that some people have tried to go into gospel music industry because they heard that they can make a lot of money in the industry, only for them to fail and go back to producing secular music.

“Someone tried to go into gospel because he thought that is where the money is,” said Kanyoni. “He did not make sales, so he went back into secular, then back into gospel again,” he added, while asking and asked Gitau to be consistent in singing for God and continue being humble.

“Wow, I can not believe that this is Isabella singing and talking so powerfully like this,” quipped the master of ceremonies, Stephen Kanyoni, also from Lowell.

“She is always so quiet and humble that even an egg would not break in her presence,” added Kanyoni, drawing a loud of laughter from the crowd.

“Most of her songs on this CD are good. Unbelievable,” said Grace Kahuko, praising the CD produced by Eddie Njenga, a Kenyan music producer.

Speaking on the word of God, the host of the event, Rev. Dr. Mumbui Karimi, who is also Gitau’s pastor at the PCEA Ushindi church, told Kenyans that praising God through songs is a way to be counted among his people. It takes a person ready to do things with the lord for the lord. That’s what it takes to be counted among his people,” said pastor Karimi.

The president of the Kenya gospel Artists Association, Irene Kamau, congratulated Gitau for being a humble person who has finally produced her own worship music. “Isabella has humbled herself so much. She is a real worshipper,” said Kamau.

She wished her all the best of luck as she immerses herself in the new career.
When he took the podium, the chairman of the Kenya Pastors Association, Bishop David Karaya asked gospel artists to help one another as they continued to increase the variety of music produced.

“I want to encourage the fraternity of singers that may God help you resist to be selfish. Help the upcoming artists so they may also function in their ministries,” said the pastor.

Among current artists who perfomed at the event were Elizabeth Mbugua, Lucy Muthumbi, Elizabeth Kariuki, Fidels Kuria, Peris Ndungu, Jayne Tinega, Elizabeth Wanyoike . An upcoming gospel worshiper, Joyce Mungai, also performed, while Rachael Njeri, visiting from London, UK, staged a powerful showing.

Other pastors at the event included Rev. Dr. Charles Karanja of PEFA church in Malden, Rev. Charls Kihiko of Calvary Evangelical church in Lowell, and Rev. Samuel Kimuhu of Saint Stephens’s church in Lowell and Pastor Samuel Kariuki of Liberty church in Worcester.

The event ended with a vote of thanks by Peter Gitau , who is the younger brother to Isabella Gitau.

"We thank everybody who came to support my sister in this CD launching ceremony. She is the only one who took seriously our mother's tough training in singing and i am very proud of how well she is doing", said the younger Gitau.
