Fracas Erupt at Ushindi church over Controversial Affidavit

By Harrison Maina, Ajabu Africa News, posted MAY 10, 2011

LOWELL, Mass._ Parishioners at the embattled Ushindi church in Lowell, Massachusetts on Sunday came close to man to man blows when an usher refused a parishioner the right to read an affidavit being passed in the church for willing members to sign in support of the embattled former pastor, Dr. Mumbui Karimi.

The bizarre saga unfolded during the mother’s day service on Sunday soon after the announcements were read the by church secretary, Stephen Kanyoni.

According to reliable and close sources present during the fracas, Kanyoni made an announcement that seemed engineered to incite members who support the pastor against those who disagree with the way the way the pastor injected himself back into the church before completing the 6 month rehabilitation period as mandated by the Presbytery of Northern New England, (PNNE), the church oversight body.

PNNE had defrocked the pastor after finding him guilty of   3 sexual abuse counts perpetrated on a young female member of his church.

However, after obeying the orders for about two months, Dr. Mumbui made a surprising about turn and revoked his membership with the presbytery (PNNE), defied their orders and forcefully injected himself again into the church last January, plunging the entire church into a crisis that has continued to dog them to date.

According to reliable sources, after a passionate appeal for support to the pastor when making the announcements on Sunday, the secretary of the church, Stephen Kanyoni, asked members to sign an affidavit that was to be used in the legal system hoping to show that a majority of the church members want the former pastor to continue serving at the badly divided church regardless of the accusations leveled against him that now include a criminal probe for the alleged sexual abuse and a few other cases involving church finances and governance.

"Some people signed the affidavit and others did not want to get themselves involved”, said a source to Ajabu Africa News on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the issue.

However, when the affidavit reached a certain section of the church, one hawk-eyed member demanded to be given an opportunity to read the contents of the affidavit before committing his signature to it.

But when the usher handling the affidavit refused to let go, the vigilant member reached out and swiftly retrieved the controversial document from the usher's hands in an effort to take a peek at the contents therein.

“It was at this point when the usher pounced on the member trying to recover the document, causing a commotion that attracted other members sitting nearby to rush forward and try to separate the two men who had now almost started exchanging blows”, reported another Ajabu source.
