Kenyan Mother Passes Away in Lowell

By Harrison Maina, Ajabu Africa News

LOWELL, Mass. AUGUST 10_A 44 year old Kenyan mother, passed away suddenly on Sunday morning from what family sources said was infection from Pneumonia.

Catherine Njeri Njoroge, a resident of Lowell, Massachusetts, passed away while undergoing treatment at the Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston.

According to family sources, the late Njeri had   almost fully recovered from treatment from blood cancer (Leukemia), which has been going on since July last year when it was discovered.

However, all of a sudden, she got a pneumonic infection that claimed her life, to the dismay of her young family.

Shocked Kenyans and friends immediately started gathering at her residence at 1001 West Ford Street, Apt 3, in Lowell (Get directions), for mourning and burial planning.

The late Njeri leaves behind two daughters, 17 and 25 years, and two grandsons,  all who arrived in the US last year from Kenya to join their mother and grandmother.

Hailing from Ol Karau village, Magumu Division of Nyahururu District in central Kenya, the late Njeri arrived in the United States to look for greener pastures in October, 2003.

“She was a strong woman who worked very hard”, said Bishop David Karaya, chairman of the Kenya pastors fellowship in America, before leading a prayer session at the late Njeri’s house last night.

The late Njeri worshipped at the Community Christian Fellowship church (CCF) in Lowell, where Bishop Karaya is one of the pastors.

“It is good if we as concerned Kenyans stand with this family at this difficult time in their lives, which can happen to anyone”, Karaya told AjabuAfrica.com

According to the late Njeri’s family, their mother started complaining of feeling unwell around July last year.

“It started with her complaining of dental pain. Then she started feeling nausea and general sickness”, said a family member.

Around July, Njeri checked herself in at the Lowell General Hospital where tests revealed that she was suffering from blood cancer.

They then transferred her to Brigham and Women’s hospital where she continued to get treatment that was going very well until the attack by pneumonia took her life, the family revealed.

Unfortunately, Njeri’s family does not have sufficient funds to transport the body of their mother back to her ancestral land for burial; consequently, they are turning to their Kenyan community and friends for help.

An organizing committee that was hurriedly constituted has planned a fundraising and memorial ceremony   that will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Community Christian Fellowship Church (CCF) starting 3pm.

The CCF church is located on 105 Princeton Blvd, Lowell Mass.

“We request all kenayans of good will and their friends to come and support the late Njeri’s family with prayers and funds to give a decent burial for their departed mother”, said Bishop Karaya.
