Several Kenyans from New England area came together over weekend to raise money for Loise Wanja, a single mother of 13-month-old twins from Nashua, N.H.

The fundraiser organized by a group of women from Nashua was held at 43 Congress St., Apt 7, Nashua, N.H., on Saturday. It raised more than $3,000 to help Wanja and her children. The trio is temporarily staying with Jane Njuniria, a family friend, and the money will help them be independent.

Besides the cash donation, dozens of people also brought gifts for the children. Njuniria said donations are still coming in and several people have pledged to bring more cash and presents. The family has received an additional $1,000 since Monday, she said.

Njuniria expressed gratitude to the Kenyan community for helping Wanja and her twins.

“We thank everybody, who came out and supported us in this matter” she said.

Kenyans, who attended the funds drive, also took turns holding the babies.

Pastor John Wainaina from Nashua led the opening prayers while his wife, fAnne Wainaina, led the praise and worship and coordinated the event that was conducted in Kiswahili and English.

Milkah Mbugua read the word of God. He asked Kenyans to continue loving and praying for one another at all times.

Mr. Peter Mbatia led the collection of the funds, assisted by Rev. Charles Kihiko .They both appealed for kind donations especially from men because if it was not for a man, people would not be there raising funds.

Wanja thanked the Kenyan community for their generosity. She recounted how the father of her children deserted and thanked the community for giving her a new lease of life.

“I just wanted to go somewhere where at least some people like me,” she said. “I had all kinds of thoughts that you can imagine of. I want to thank you all for coming, and may God bless you.”
