Kenyans in Boston ring in 2011 with a good measure of faith

by Harrison Maina, posted January 2011, 2010

LOWELL, _ Kenyans in the New England region ushered in the New Year 2011 in style with multiple church services while others attended parties in different locations.

At least 200 Kenyans congregated at the Christ is the Answer church in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts for a massive overnight prayer, which was part of functions organized to welcome the New Year.

As soon at the clock officially hit 12.00 am, on January 1st, 2011, worshippers screamed and shouted with joy as they hugged and congratulated each other for having made it into the New Year.

The event was hosted by Pastor John Wachira of the CITAC church who led the crowd into welcoming the New Year as the praise and worship team belted sweet melodies from the stage.

“Let us shout and praise God for having seen us through to the New Year,” said Pastor Wachira. “Let us dedicate our lives to serving him more in the coming New Year and all that we pray for shall be given,” he added.

Delivering a new year’s message, Dr. Solomon Waigwa, leader in  the African Holy Ghost church popularly known in the Kenyan circles as the Akorino sect, told Christians that while marking the new year, it is the time to identify challenging problems that they can ask the lord to help solve.

“Seek and you shall be given,” he said. He asked them to be people of big visions because such visions will come to reality if pursued in the Godly way of doing things.

“You have to have a vision to catapult you to greater heights. The vision will give you audacity to face obstacles and overcome them,” said the professor.

He added that it is unfortunate that Kenyans have come to the greatest country in the world but they are just floating in the sea aimlessly taking whichever job they can find or going to any school that is open without following particular visions.

He also said that children are getting lost in the morass trying to become like Americans which, the professor said, will never happen. He attributed this to the failure by parents to bequeath them a vision and a road map to succeed with their original identity, leaving them moving through life aimlessly in a different culture.

He said that for them to success in America, their parents need to bequeath to them the true spiritual legacy of the word of God that will guide them down the road when challenges of life show up.

To do this, the professor added, parents have to create a habit for their children to attend church every Sunday morning without failure or excuses.

“In my house, Monday through Friday, it’s either the school or the ER (Emergency room). On Sunday, it’s church with no negotiations. If we are sick, we drag our carcasses to church.”

The cleric also castigated the church in America, saying that it has lost the true word of God and is now there just to make people feel good.

“The church in this country has lost the true word of God. It has begun to follow the majority.”

In a veiled attack to preachers who preach just to make people good rather than follow the true teaching of the work of God, Dr. Waigwa said that he and his ministers have vowed to stand for the true word of God regardless of the circumstances.

He chided Kenyans present for not speaking up when some preachers stop teaching or practicing the true gospel.

“Inyuothe muhana ta andu ahake, ati mutingirugama muuge  nima” (Kikuyu for “all of you look like bribed people, that you can not stand up and say it is the truth”).

"Nonsense will never become sense just becasue it was said by a doctor or a big person", he added.

He advised Kenyans that following what the majority says always leads to loss in the spiritual matters.

“Let us stand for the true word of God. It is the word and it will never change,” added the cleric who also heads the department of Religion and Philosophy at the Wiley University in Waco, Texas.

Wishing all Kenyans in America a happy New Year, Prof. Waigwa, who was accompanied by his wife, asked them to seek the holy spirit of God so that their lives will be full with joy and achievement.

Several other pastors who were present at the event gave a few testimonies and New Year wishes to worshippers before Prof. Rev. Solomon Waigwa from Texas started his new year’s sermon.

Among the pastors present were pastor Joseph Kariuki, Rev. Samuel Kimohu of the Saint Stephens church , Pastor Jane Ndungu , who represented her husband, David Ndungu of the CCF church and Apostle Mary Nganga.

Making his comments, Rev, Kimohu told worshippers that the problem with people when it comes to celebrating the New Year is that many keep the old hearts they had the previous year instead of having them renewed.

“The problem is not the New Year. The problem is the old heart,” advised Rev. Kimohu.

Elsewhere, Kenyans had congregated in other churches to welcome the New Year before some of them joined the Christ in the Answer church for the overnight celebration. Various secular Disc Jockeys entertained fans in different venues all across New England and other states.
