SALEM, Mass. NOVEMBER 12_ Clad in pitch black flowing regalia and scary masks, they moved in a long procession, from downtown Salem mass, singing mournful songs past the old, historic witch house on Essex st , making many turns onto different streets until they reached their destination; a green grass field in the center of the Salem state park, Massachusetts.
It was in this old historic city of Salem that 19 witches were accused of witchcraft related activities, arrested and tried at the witch house on Essex street.
After they were convicted of acts of witchcraft, they were paraded at the gallows located at the current Salem state park and hanged till proven dead.
It is in remembrance for these witches that the procession in Salem takes place every year
during the Halloween celebrations throughout the US.
Halloween day has become a major holiday in the US , even for people who have scant knowledge of it’s origin and roots and businesses have cashed in on the massive interest by selling a wide assortment of Halloween goodies including skeleton masks , scary clothing , dead eople images , movies and many more.
The holiday has its roots from the culture dating many years ago in England.
Usually, to generate maximum impact, the scarier an item is the better for the folks involved.
Though generally peaceful, Halloween day has in the past been associated with violence and robberies by some crooks.
Many African parents in the US , including Christians, let out their children for trick or treat, a move that some church leaders say is troublesome.
