Relashionships- Once Bitten Twice Shy Part II
By Rosemary Namoki
Mary’s cell phone vibrated several times before she could reach for it. It was buried amongst other items in her purse, and she could not immediately find it.
“Who could be calling me at this time,” she wondered, as she sifted through the contents of her purse in search of the cell phone.
Mary had put her phone on vibration the previous night and didn’t bother to set it back to its normal ring tone this morning because she had to work, and her company has a very stringent no cell phone policy.
Mary reached for the gadget and hid it under her desk because she didn’t want her co-workers to see it. She hurriedly looked at the screen. Mary had three missed calls. This was unusual, and Mary couldn’t understand it because she never receives calls from her family and friends during office hours.
Mary curiously pressed the answering button to find out who her caller was. She didn’t recognize the number because it was not in her address book.
“May be it is Joel’s number,” she thought aloud. She quickly retrieved Joel’s business card from her purse to see if the numbers matched. Mary was right.
It had been two days since she and Joel met. The encounter had left Mary with mixed feelings, and she was trying very hard to forget about him.
Joel had left a voice message, and Mary quickly rushed to the bathroom to listen to it.
“Hi Mary, this is Joel,” the voice message said. “I hope you remember me, yeah. …. Please call me back as soon as you can….”
Mary felt a rush of warm blood through her veins and her heart beat very fast as she listened to the rest of the message.
She smiled broadly.
Mary went back to her desk, put the phone back into her handbag and tried to focus on her work. She had no intentions of returning Joe’s call.
But Mary’s phone vibrated again a few hours later. This time, she heard it although she was busy tending to a customers over the phone. Her supervisor also happened to be standing a few steps from her desk, so Mary resisted the temptation to check who was calling her.
Finally, it was time to go home, and Mary hurriedly picked up her purse and headed to the bathroom to freshen up. She looked at her phone and noticed that Joe had called once again. He didn’t leave a message this time around, and Mary felt a bit disappointed.
She left the office and headed to the train station. Unlike before, Mary was very conscious of her surrounding this time and looked around very carefully as she walked to the station.
She boarded the train and settled down to read a novel. But Mary could not concentrate. She found her eyes wandering around looking for Joel. Mary was so engrossed in deep thoughts about Joel that she didn’t even realize when the train arrived in Boston.
She walked slowly to her apartment. It was around 6.45 p.m., so she took a quick shower and warmed up some food for supper. Mary was preparing to eat when her phone rang again. She reached for it and answered it.
“Hey! I have been looking for you all day long. Where have you been?’ Joel asked. The duo exchanged a few words then agreed to meet the next day.
“What did I just do?” Mary asked.
