Mt. Kenya University awarded Charter

NAIROBI, Kenya_Kenya President Mwai Kibaki has appealed to universities operating in
the country to uphold high academic standards to ensure that students
and parents get value for their money.
The President who spoke at a ceremony where Mount Kenya University was
awarded a charter as the 12th Private University operating in Kenya
congratulated efforts being made by Kenyans and partners from abroad
in developing the education system for the Kenyan Students.
The award
of a charter makes Mt. Kenya University in Thika a fully-fledged
university.
The Kenya Statesman emphasized that universities; Public and Private
should aim at equipping their granduants with relevant skills that
enable them compete for jobs nationally and globally.
“I am aware that the Ministry of Higher Education, through the
Commission for Higher Education, has instituted strategies and
procedures for accreditation and quality assurance,” said the
President.
While restating the Vision 2030, President Kibaki called on all
Universities operating in Kenya to support the building of a new Kenya
as envisaged in the New Constitution.
“For Kenya to achieve the goals of Vision 2030, the country requires
a vibrant tertiary and university education system, said the Head of
State.
To realize Kenya’s aspirations, the President said his Government has
stepped up its efforts in enhancing access, equity and relevance of
university education by establishing new public university colleges.
He added that the Government is also revamping the technical,
industrial, vocational and business training sector in the
country which include the establishment of new national polytechnics
and the development of new model technical training institutions in
all parts of our country.”

The President said the Coalition Government has continued to increase
financing to the higher education sector through increased funding to
the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) so as to support needy
students.
He pointed out that this financing is now available to all Kenyan
students both in public and private universities in the country and in
the East
Africa Community.
In this connection, President Kibaki urged universities to supplement
the Government’s efforts by raising funds for bursaries, scholarships
and other schemes that enhance access and equity in the higher
education.
The President noted that the award of a charter to Mt. Kenya
University makes it the
12th private university in Kenya to have attained full accreditation
status. President Kibaki urged the management and students of Mt Kenya
University to maintain high standards of academic excellence and
governance.
President Kibaki commended the university’s sponsors for their
persistence in developing the institution, saying Mt. Kenya University
has rendered valuable service to the country by supplementing the
Government’s efforts in the provision of higher education.
Other speakers included at the ceremony included acting Higher
Education Minister Prof Hellen Sambili, MK University Chancellor
Victoria Wells Wulsin, Vice Chancellor Prof. Stanley Waudo, Nazarene
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Leah Marangu.
