LOWELL,Mass. JULY 8__Kenyans in Boston were not sure of what to read of the recent low key visit by the usually fiery cleric – cum politician, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, who is the MP for Starehe constituency in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya, and an assistant minister for housing.
Bishop Wanjiru, who did not divulge much of her mission in the US, steered clear of mainline politics. She took on her role as a preacher during a two week visit in Boston in the month of June, 2009.
”Am focusing more here on preaching than politics”, Hon. Wanjiru told AjabuAfrica.com.
Bishop Wanjiru surprised many when she survived through a slew of bad wrangles and accusations in the Kenyan media revolving her ex husband (now the late), who alleged that she had married him in a Kikuyu customary marriage, and who she separated from years ago, and her eventual engagement and pending marriage to a South African man.
In spite of all the bad publicity, Bishop Wanjiru went on to win in the 2008 disputed general elections in Kenya and became the Member of Parliament for Starehe.
During the recent Boston tour, Hon. Wanjiru met with Kenyan pastors for dinner in Lowell Mass, then led a crusade at the Community Christian church (CCF) in Lowell and a Tuesday fellowship service at the Quincy fellowship on June 22 nd before jetting out of the country.
At the destiny crusade at the CCF church organized by Rev. Joseph Waiyaki of Faith service ministries, Bishop Wanjiru asked Kenyans to stay strong in spite of the hardships they may be facing trying to settle in a foreign land.
She said that many Christians did not want to admit to problems in their lives, yet problems will definitely come in life.
Hon. Wanjiru advised Christians to be ready to get tested and that only those who pass the test by fire will reap the rewards of a good life.
“Your works shall be tried by fire. If you stand trial by fire, then you will get the reward”, said the Bishop.
Giving herself as an illustration, Hon.Wanjiru narrated the problems she has gone through in her walk with God to a point of having no food.
”I was so poor I could not feed myself, nor get the money to pay for my kid’s high school”.
She caused laughter when she narrated a story when she at one time went on a preaching mission in Uganda in a borrowed African dress. “Before I could finish my mission, the owner of the dress called and demanded it back”, Wanjiru said.
“But today, look where I am. I am a blessed preacher. Today, it is me who blesses others with school fees”, she said.
The Bishop asked those people who are stuck in their past to let go otherwise they will stay sick in their minds and will live miserable lives.
”Most of the diseases with most people started from the heart, from disappointed emotions and the desires”.
Wanjiru said that years ago, she was so disappointed with her past and she at one point asked herself, “what do I do, die of disappointment, - no baby, not me”, she quoted herself as resolving. This resolve coupled with faith in God helped her overcome many hurdles in her life.
Delving naturally into politics which she had promised to avoid, the Bishop blamed Kenyans for the messy situation that the country finds itself in.
“Most of the leaders of Kenya are drunkards, drug dealers, murderer’s idol worshippers, womanizers etc”. Those are the people you elect, and then start complaining when they don’t deliver. She asked Kenyans to vet carefully any leader who wants to serve the people.
During the dinner with the pastors a few days prior, Kenyan pastors present registered their disapproval with the way the clergy in Kenya had gotten mixed up in the controversial general elections of 2008.
“Many members of the clergy openly got involved in ‘anointing’ and campaigning for different leaders from their own tribes, claiming that they are God given. This led to a lot of division in the Christian community”, said Rev. Kimohu of Saint Stephens church.
“We as pastors in the Kenyan community here would not like to see such a thing happen again during the next general elections, he added.
During her stay in Boston, Bishop Wanjiru was accompanied by Lady Kathy, aka Mama Bob who helped with her travel and other needs.
